Cannot boot up

We have a Dell laptop with Windows Vista. (Sorry don't have any other info). The problem we have is my son closed up the laptop whilst it was doing an update so now when we try to start up the computer keeps going in cycles and won't boot up. Any ideas?

While booting up (after the power on self test) press F8 to enter the boot menu.

Select "last known good configuration".

That may solve the problem.
