Dial up internet constantly disconnecting

Postby icecoldcecil on Sun Mar 21, 2010 1:39 am

Recently got a dell optiplex gx280. 1 gb ram-160 gb hd-2.8 processor. It has xp pro OS. I use netscape dial up service and have never had a lot of disconnect issues. This dell did not have a modem, so I purchased an external modem. Since then, I am only able to stay connected to the internet for about 5 minutes at a time, which sucks.

I have tried the modem on my old compaq and it does stay connected longer for the compaq, so there must be an issue with the settings or something interfering or something. I have bought a new phone cord for it, adjusted the port speeds and even typed initualization instructions in the control panel area (s10=250) based on web search information. Nothing has worked yet. there must be an answer, I just haven't found it yet.

If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear it. Well, my five minutes is about up. I'll check back later.

Thanks.

What speed is it connecting at? It does sound like you are on a pretty bad phone line. Try to connect at a lower speed. Also check if your phone cables that are hooked up to your modem is not damaged or loose.

I can't get you any specific connection strings as i do not know the exact model of your modem.
