Questions about hard drives and solid state drives.

Errrrr

Postby J_Luchinski on Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:45 pm

So I booted up my computer and almost right away I got a screen that said Disk Read Error: Press CTRL ALT DELETE To Restart, and I did and it just kept on doing it. So I pulled the drive and connected it to another system via a usb kit, and when I try to open it up from my computer it tells me it can't be accessed because of an IO error. What the hell is going on and how do I fix it? There both XP systems and I tried connecting it as a slave drive but I can't find it period. Thanks in advance for your help.

As the drive worked before and you probably have not done anything to the drive then it sounds to me it got corrupted because of a faulty sector, probably the boot sector. Try to run Scandisk on it. You can find scandisk in the Start Menu under All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Let us know what the results are and if you still get an io error. Make sure it shows up in bios, the drive that is.

I can't seem to locate Scandisk, or I don't have it. And when the drive was in the other machine it did recognize it in BIOS. Maybe I'll try to find another disk repair program, because your more then likely right.

So I was able to install it as a slave drive, and now when I go to open it I'm getting a "Drive E: is not formatted. Would you like to format it now"?

You do not want to do that if you have data on it you want to save. Sounds like the boot sector got screwed and it thinks it is an unformatted drive with nothing on it.

Take a look at the utilities at http://www.sharewareconnection.com/titles/repair-boot-sector.htm they might help you out.
