ethernet adapter
2 posts • Page 1 of 1
ethernet adapterI have tried to switch the connections from the modem directly to the connection on the tower and I still have a red x that appears stating that a network cable is unplugged.I have tried different cables and I know it is not the router because the laptop is working fine.So Iwas wondering how I go about replacing the adapter for the ethernet cable in the back of the tower.I was also wondering from what I have stated if that sounds like the best solution? Thank you in advance for your help.
Re: ethernet adapterBefore anything else, check the Device Manager and see if your Ethernet card has an "X" or an "!" warning.
If it has an X, it may be disabled. Just right-click it and select enable. If it has an ! it may not have a driver installed or it is installed improperly. Delete the item (right-click and select delete) and select Scan for hardware changes from the top menu, and see if your Ethernet adapter is detected. If it is, reinstall the driver automatically (if it was installed previously, or Windows automatically supports it) or supply the disc that came with your Ethernet adapter. Virtually all desktop computers nowadays come with the Ethernet adapter built-in, so it may not be possible to "replace" it. You could, of course, plug another one in a vacant PCI slot. That being said, I'm inclined to think that your network adapter isn't broken, more likely than not, it's probably misconfigured, or installed improperly, considering that you have an icon with an X appearing. I would recommend you try and sort that out first before considering replacing/installing another network card.
