Hard Drive Added - Sharing issue

My old Compaq XP died recently... I purchased a USB SATA/IDE cable so I could use the old hard drive outside the new computer (to retrieve some documents & pics mainly)... the connection was recognized & I can access some files, BUT I cannot access the "Compaq Owner" (me) files... what do I do to be able to get into my old files ??? thanks, Erin

You're not recognized as the owner of that folder anymore, hence you're not given access to them. To fix that, you need to take ownership.

Right-click the folder you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties;

Click the Security tab, and then click OK;

Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab;

In the Name list, click your user name or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, then click OK;

If you want to take ownership of the entire contents of a particular folder, click on Replace Owner on the Subcontainers and Objects box, then click OK;

You'll get a confirmation dialogue box, click Yes.

That should do the trick.

The procedure is a little different for an individual file, but more or less you get the picture of what needs to be done.
