An IMAP account stores email remotely. The benefit of this is that it makes your email very portable. Instead of using only one computer, you will be able to use many computers to read your email.

Also, with IMAP you do not have to download complete messages. You can elect to download headers only, parts of your email to save bandwidth and storage (once downloaded). Good if you have a cellphone that you want to read emails with.
