It's a bit hard to answer your question in the absence of certain details, but let's try giving it a go.
Before anything else, try a reboot. You'd be surprised how many problems a simple reboot can clear up.
If it doesn't change anything, check your tray if the network icon is displayed properly and indicates you're connected to your network.
If there's an X, it's possible your router is off, or your wi-fi disconnected, or your LAN cable is unplugged (see what's applicable in your case).
If you're connected to the network but there's no internet access, try turning your DSL modem/cable modem/etc. off then on again.
Try browsing the internet using another PC on the network, your ISP may just be down temporarily.
If other PCs on the network can access the internet and you
can't, try resetting your PC's network card (LAN or Wi-Fi, whatever you use). It's normally done by right-clicking the network icon on your tray and selecting "Repair", or "Diagnose and Repair".
If these suggestions don't work, we may need further specifics to diagnose the problem.
Are you running XP or Vista? A variant of Linux, perhaps?
Or you on a wired or wireless network?
Is your husband's laptop running XP or Vista, and is it connected wirelessly or via network cable?
What sort of adware did you remove? What program removed it? It's possible an important system file was deleted, causing your connection problems.
The good news is, in all likelihood, your problem is very much solvable. The bad news is, it's a bit difficult to determine the true cause from a general description. Maybe you can furnish a few more details?
Hope this helps somewhat.
