laptop screen grey at startup

laptop screen grey at startup
randomly, when i turn on my laptop, during startup, it will display a grey screen, it loads up, but won't display. sometimes moving the screen helps, and other times i have to shut it off and boot it up again. is this a major problem? i can't afford to fix it right now. any ideas why this happens?
