maxed out memory online

I have a Compaq Presario with XP which has been working well until recently. Now, when I go online, the memory maxes out almost immediately and the browser freezes. I have Symantic suite and have run all checks and updates and everything appears fine. I tried to do a system restore and chose several bolded (approved) dates but got a message after the program ran that it could not restore to the previous date.

Any ideas how to fix?

You said you restored your computer to make sure there is no viruses or other malware on your computer?

Well, in that case, if you have some spare memory modules lying around, replace them with what you have and see if your system works better. You might have a faulty memory module.
