Need help installing a graphics card.

Postby MrPerod on Fri Feb 06, 2009 12:51 pm

I am installing a graphics card in my Dell computer. I am told I have an Intel Integrated Graphics Processor rather than a graphics card. How does that change the installation? I have tried talking to support at Dell but I am out of warranty so they won't help me.

I do know what drivers the new card will take and have downloaded and installed them. I am not sure if I need to uninstall anything before shutting down the computer or ??? Someone told me I may to change the bios.

Please help!

The integrated graphics card should be disabled automatically, atleast it is in most cases. To make sure it is disabled, you can log into bios and disable it there. Should mention something about the integrated graphics card being set to automatic or disabled. But like i said, it is not nessesary most of the time.

Most newer motherboards can detect a video card inserted in an available AGP or PCIe slot and automatically turn off the integrated graphics. In this case, all you have to do is turn the computer off, plug in your card, and turn it on again. Assuming your card uses a GPU from Nvidia or ATI and you're using Windows, you just cancel the "found new hardware" window and run the appropriate driver setup program, preferably the latest GeForce driver for Nvidia or Catalyst driver for ATI.

If your motherboard is does not automatically turn off the integrated graphics, just enter your BIOS setup (you usually have to press something like DEL or F2 while the computer is booting up to enter the BIOS) find an entry along the lines of "integrated peripherals" and turn off the graphics from there.
