Please help me

Postby prov31mom23 on Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:07 pm

My 16 year old daughter tried to boot up her computer yesterday to work on a school paper. She got a blue screen that says to disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk
defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive
configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to
check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190444, 0x845EA4C0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

Well, we tried to boot into safe mode but the blue screen appears each time.

That's about the extent of my technical knowledge of computers!

An online friend's husband suggested "Were there any CD's that came with the laptop?

If not there might be a repair partition on the harddrive that will allow you to fix the problem. Be very careful though as some of these just wipe everything out and give you a fresh computer and all your files are gone. Below is another option. This is a difficult fix without getting hands on.

If you are unable to load Windows. Then you will need to do some deep nerd stuff in order to attempt a fix.

You can try to access your ntfs partitions by making a ntfs boot disk with NTFS4DOS (freeware). You can download it from http://www.geekswhoknow.com/files/ntfsinst.exe You will need a blank CD or a flash drive to copy to.

You will need to set the bios to boot from the flash drive or CD. After you load the NTFS4DOS onto your damaged system, select either option one (1) or option three (3). If you selected option one (1), type chkdsk /r at the command prompt, and your problem should go away after the disk has been repaired.

Note! Unfortunately there is a chance that your partition is corrupt beyond repair and all of your data is lost. In that case, you need to reformat the partition to be able to use it again."

So I have several questions. First, she cannot find the CDs that came with her laptop. We both have Vista Home Premium. Could she use mine? If so, how does she use it? What CD would she need?

If that doesn't work, the next thing he mentioned was a repair partition. I don't know anything about that and am somewhat apprehensive about trying but with clear instructions, I might gain some confidence. Is this option preferable to the third option he mentioned?

The third option - the information he copied from this website - How do I set the BIOS to boot from the CD? Once I do that, do I simply put the CD in the drive and hope it reads it and does something? Would those options that are mentioned come up automatically? That seems too simplistic to me - but I know nothing about this. What is option 3?

If none of this works, and we have to resort to reformatting the partition, is that something I would be able to do myself or would we need to have a pro handle it? Finances are pretty tight at the moment - my husband has been unemployed for nearly a year and I am a stay at home mother - so if I could do this myself, I'd be more than willing to try. I'd just need clear instructions.

Thank you so much in advance.

I have a problem that's similar, and would very much appreciate an answer.

I can't get past the blue screen on my home PC, but found the download of NTFS4DOS on your website using my computer at work. The instructions are not clear and I don't know what to do next.

Do I copy the "ntfsinst.exe" file to a floppy disc, then bring it home to my home PC and work with it that way? If yes, what do I do next?

Do I double click the "ntfsinst.exe" file on my work computer, make a bootable floppy disc on my work computer, then bring that disc home to my home PC and work with it that way? If yes, what do I do next?

FYI...I did try the second option, but didn't seem to get too far. I was able to type in "NTFS4DOS.EXE" from the dos prompt on my home PC. It appeared as if something was loading, at the end of which the program name was spelled out (some of the lettering was even in color). But then what? I have no clue what to do next.

I believe I am supposed to be able to run a checkdisk function to fix or repair any errors that might be on my hard drive. Beyond that I'm clueless (as you can tell).

Thanks for any help you can offer.
