Powers up, Dies 5-15 Seconds into Startup

Postby helpthenomad on Tue Jul 27, 2010 1:46 pm

Hello,

I'm having an issue with my computer and I'm hoping to get it repaired. I've tested it with a different hard drive, power supply and battery and it's still giving me the same symptoms. The internal cooling fan still kicks on and it's running quietly. That's pretty much expired my foray into the computer repair world, and I need someone more knowledgeable to look at it or at least tell me what direction to head in next.

The symptoms:

It's been freezing when bumped for a while, overheating very easily and just been generally crabby. It had the blue screen of death a while back but managed to come back to life and work for another couple of weeks, but no such luck this time.

I was using it a couple days ago when it suddenly shut down, I had noticed before it died that the battery was indicating it was only half charged although the computer had been plugged in all night and the entire time just before it died.

Not having had much experience in the world of computer repair, I assumed it was the hard drive. After it totally crashed I bought a new HD, same symptoms. I took it to the mega electronics store and tried out a charger and battery (equivalent voltage, amps, etc) to no change in symptoms.

The charger and battery light come on (most of the time,) but now they turn on independently (charger first and then battery a second later.) When I push the power button, both power leds either immediately turn off or the computer starts up like normal and anywhere from 10-15 seconds into the boot process the entire thing dies. It has been accessing the hard drive, once it almost got all the way to the login screen (and definitely showed the windows logo.) After that, the only way to get it to recognize that there is a charger plugged in is to completely remove and replace the battery and power supply.

Ideally, I'd like to get that hard drive back and I'd like to get this computer running again for the next year and a half or so.

Have you tried to completely remove the battery and only run with a power cord? That would eliminate the battery if that is the cause.

Also, you say your computer runs quietly, has it always been running that quiet? Your symptoms usually show up if a computer is overheated. Did you check so all fans are operational / not plugged with dust?
