It depends on how far you want to go to get your harddrive unformatable. Simplest way to go would be to make sure no one exept you are administrator on the computer and make sure you can only boot from the hard drive you installed.
To make sure the harddrive is the only boot drive, then you need to alter the boot options in your bios. Remove all boot options that are not your harddrive. That way no one can just boot up your computer using any other media.
On some harddrives there is a pin that you can enable to write protect the whole drive, but that might not be useful at all for you.
Saying that, it is virtually impossible to completely prevent your drive from being formatted. Make sure you always have a backup of the drive. Lock down permissions and make sure your hard drive is the only boot drive. Then you should be pretty safe.
