problem with motherboard?

Postby TomB on Wed May 05, 2010 12:55 am

I built a new system with ASUS M4A79T Deluxe MB, AMD Phenom II X4 945 processor, 4 GIG's PNY DDR3 1333 memory, Vista 64 Ultmate. When I start the system in the morning I get a blue screen memory dump crash. If I then switch the SATA port for the boot drive everything is fine. The system will then work for the rest of the day, I can do complete shutdowns, unplug it and do restarts fine. But the next morning the same blue screen dump, I then switch the SATA port and all is good. Things I've tried: Swapped the hard for new one and reloaded the system from the CD, same problem. I changed the SATA cables, I changed the memory and updated the bios.

Appreciate any ideas on what this could be.

Thanks,
Tom

What do you mean by switching sata ports?

I turn the machine off and uplug the drive from the SATA cable and plug in another SATA cable which is attachced to another SATA port. I also just tried removing the battery to clear the CMOS, this seems to have worked, but I won't really know until I try it tomorrow morning.

If it were me, I would test your hard drive. I don't care if you just bought it five seconds ago or last week, they can be bad. With that, I also suggest you run windows updates.

Hi, thanks for the advice.

So far I have run every update I can find on Windows, the system board, the bois and video. I have also run the sequence on three hard drives all with the same effect. I either have to remove the battery or switch the SATA cable to get an effective boot. If I don't do this I either get a blue screen memory dump or it will boot but will be unstable and usually crash. In this state it often gives me errors on the porduct key and issues of Geninue Windows. However, if I change the SATA cable and restart all is fine.

Something is really broken for you, lol... So to understand you correctly, it stops working after prolonged time of having the computer powered off and it works fine as long as the computer is on and after you switched the sata cable?

After looking at this issue again and thinking about it, I would point towards flaky memory.

I built myself a pretty beefy system in December. I had quite a few issues with blue screens. All the errors looked like it dealt with the hard drive, so I replaced it a few times. Turned out, it was bad memory. I put new memory in, and havent had a problem since.

Bad memory will do wierd things and even make it seem like other parts are the problem.
