Sound is like a McDonald's Drive Thru... help?

I am trying to use a recording program (Sequel) I have WindowsXP, the drivers are ok, my hook ups are correct (checked each piece of external equipment eg. synth)

When I try to record vocals, the sounds is muffled, sounds "hot" (when it isn't), much like a Drive-Thru. Static.

Is this a sound card problem? Is was working, but perhaps an auto update affected something? Could something be lose in the computer?

I hope someone know what I'm talking about

What kind of mic do you use? is it usb or analog? And what kind of soundcard do you have?
