If you send someone an email on facebook can they trace your IP address?

Technically, it's possible.

If it's a case of harassment, like spamming or other forms of online abuse, Facebook itself has a log of IP addresses that access it's services. With a court order, or something along those lines, the log can be accessed and the IP address identified.

If the message is innocent enough, there probably won't be a justifiable reason to disclose the IP address it originated from.

It isn't available to you or I as users. It's probably something the facebook have access to. Accuracy can be good, though it takes coordination with ones ISP.
