Dell Laptop

I have a Dell inspiron 6000 laptop.
I am having trouble turning on my laptop
When i press the start button the power lights up but then goes out after 5-8 seconds & the operating system dose not boot up.
Previousley when the machine booted up all functions worked perfectly
Can some one help as i am reluctant to take it to a service centre.
