Vista not autdetecting drive

Postby revthought on Thu Aug 06, 2009 8:27 pm

Greetings all,

I hope you can help. I know enough about navigated the inside of my case to get myself in trouble (like now).

Basically I was running an old IDE DVD drive on my newish computer (it was left over from my last computer). Just recently I started to have some problems with it so I ordered a new SATA bluray drive from newegg.

I installed the drive (and some new ram) and I've got the following problem.

The drive shows up in the bios. My vista HD will not autodetect it. My XP hard drive does detect it, but its not working properly.

Any ideas here?

Cheers,

-S

By any chance are you using a motherboard with an NVIDIA chipset and Vista 64-bit? If so, you may have to manually replace the NVSTOR.SYS file with the 64-bit version NVSTOR64.SYS. For some reason, even on 64-bit systems, the chipset installer seems to insist on the 32-bit version.

If the above doesn't apply to you, it's possible your SATA BIOS settings may not be set correctly. Make sure all your SATA ports are enabled, and if you're not using any IDE devices, it may be worth a try to disable the IDE ports to avoid any possible resource conflicts.

Lastly, considering your drive is new, there's always the possibility that you got a bad one. If possible, try installing it on another PC (and not just using another HD/OS since you'll be using the same interfaces) and see if it works properly.

Hope this helps.
