Vista UAC problem

Postby Dwoody on Wed Dec 17, 2008 7:58 pm

I help my sisters office with their 4 PC's. The business is temporary staffing and uses a program called COATS. The data is stored on a network attached hard drive and the PC's have that folder mapped as a drive on each PC. The one PC that has Vista recently started giving the UAC prompt when running COATS, which it never did before. When choose to Allow the program it will not see the mapped drive with the data. I can access the mapped drive and data through explorer. If I turn off UAC everything works OK.

Any suggestions?

My recommendation would actually to turn UAC off at all times for that computer if it is not critical. It can be tricky to keep UAC on an preserve drive letters on an external drive. Let me know if that is not an option.

Turning off UAC is the way we are working around the problem for now.
This computer is a year old, we purchased it with Vista and loaded COATS and have never had this problem until a week ago. So I just like to have it the way it was a week ago.
I found out the main user(admin), changed her password. After a couple of days, running the COATS shortcut from the Desktop resulted in a UAC prompt.
Thinking that might be the problem she changed back to her original password. Could this cause UAC to prompt?
If I can't fix her account I was thinking of creating a new one and see how COATS runs. If it works, I'll need to transfer her files and settings which I have never done in Vista, any tips?

That might very well work. Try to delete and make a new link after you change the password before making her a new user account.

To transfer user settings etc, there is a utility called User State Migration Tool (USMT) that you can use. You should be able to find it in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > click on the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
