I connect to my companies network through a vpn connection. My question is does that allow the company I work for to access my local pc and obtain information about me ? I own the pc so this is not a workstation they gave me to use and therefore they should not have access to my local information.

Unless you have some kind of remote desktop software enabled your company should not be able to access your local files. Remote desktop software is almost never enabled by default in operating systems.

As long as you only installed VPN software from your company you should be safe.

As you are connected via the VPN they could scan any incoming and outgoing tcp/ip information that is not encrypted. Such as emails and non encrypted passwords (ftp etc).

But like the above post states, you probably would need some kind of remote desktop application installed for them to take over your computer and view everything OR if you allow administrator or any other login access from your companys network to access your computer, then they would able to read your files.

Turn off the VPN when you do not need to use it. That is my recommendation.
