xp home edtion

Postby clnie on Wed Aug 05, 2009 8:51 pm

I have a relative that has a older lap top. They had windows 98 and decided to install windows xp home edition on it. It goes to the point of installing windows and ask for the windows disk when you put it in then it goes to installing at 39 minutes once it goes to 34 minutes the screen goes black. They just want to go back to windows 98 since this is a older lap top and may not support windows xp. I tried booting to with f8 and see if I could go to the command prompt but it just goes back to booting to try to install xp . how do I get the os windows 98 back.

When the laptop starts POSTing (power on self test) press the key combination that accesses the BIOS. From there, look for the boot settings so that it'll boot from the optical drive. Insert a Windows 98 installation disc or the recovery disc that came with the laptop, boot from it, and follow the instructions.

It should be noted, that some PCs/laptops from the Windows 98 generation can't boot from the optical drive. In this case you may need a boot floppy disk before the computer can run setup from the optical drive.
