Question:  How do I find out what my IP address is on my computer?

Answer:  With Windows 2000, XP, or Vista all you have to do is click start, select all programs, click on Accessories, and then select the command prompt program. From the prompt type “ipconfig” you should get something like.

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.1

This is your IP address along with some other network information for you computer.

Question:  I have an internal ip address, wich is 192.168.0.2. I would like to find out what my external or public ip address is, how do I do that?

Answer:  It can be done a number of different ways. You can either login to your router with your username and password and take a look at your router status, it will usually show you what your public ip address is. Or you can simple surf to a website called http://www.whatismyip.com and it will tell you what your external ip address is.

Question:  I am using a Netgear router with DHCP and get an ip address assigned to me automatically. How do I get a different ip address?

Answer:  In Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. Click on Start and then Run. Type CMD or alternatively type in command. Your command prompt window should load. Type in ipconfig /release and press enter and after that type in ipconfig /renew. This should renew your DCHP lease along with your ip address. Please note though that you might not necessarily get a new ip address when you do this. But you will renew the connection to your router wich should solve your problem.
